Feeding and Oral-Motor Skills: Supporting Nutrition, Safety & Independence in Mealtimes

At KITES Child Development Centre, we recognize that mealtimes are essential opportunities for growth, connection, and independence. Our occupational therapy services are designed to support children facing challenges with feeding and oral-motor skills, ensuring they can participate safely and confidently in mealtime routines.

Our Feeding and Oral-Motor Intervention Program Includes:

  • Comprehensive Assessment: We begin with a thorough evaluation to identify specific feeding difficulties, such as oral-motor deficits, sensory sensitivities, or behavioral challenges. This assessment informs a personalized intervention plan tailored to each child’s unique needs.
  • Oral-Motor Skill Development: Our therapists employ targeted exercises to strengthen the muscles involved in chewing, swallowing, and speech. Activities may include blowing bubbles, using straws, and practicing tongue movements to enhance coordination and control.
  • Sensory Integration Strategies: For children with sensory-based feeding challenges, we implement desensitization techniques to gradually increase tolerance to various food textures, temperatures, and flavors. This approach helps reduce aversions and expand dietary variety.
  • Safe Swallowing Practices: We address swallowing difficulties by teaching proper techniques and postures to ensure safe and efficient eating. This may involve exercises to improve tongue movement and jaw stability, as well as guidance on appropriate food textures.
  • Family-Centered Mealtime Coaching: Recognizing the vital role of families in a child’s feeding development, we provide education and support to caregivers. This includes strategies for creating positive mealtime environments, establishing routines, and encouraging self-feeding skills.

By addressing both the physical and sensory aspects of feeding, our goal is to empower children to enjoy mealtimes, meet their nutritional needs, and develop independence in eating. Through individualized therapy and collaborative support, we strive to make every bite a step toward growth and confidence.
